reek ended its absolutely delightful four-season run on ABC Family last night on a truly bittersweet note: not only because [SPOILER ALERT!!!] the KT house was demolished to bits, but also because it marked the demise of a show that was way better than it had any right to be. What looked like a shallow guilty pleasure at first glance — a light drama about fraternities and sororities — turned out to be a brave, fresh, witty take on college life. Whether you were in the Greek system or abhorred anyone who ever wore arcane letters on a sweatshirt, you couldn’t help but fall in love with these kids. So as a final ode to our Greek brethren — along with this Q&A with Greek creator Patrick Sean Smith — we give you five reasons we’ll miss this show:

1. The characters … and the actors who played them. This was Greek‘s greatest legacy. We couldn’t help relating to, caring about, and pining for the multi-faceted characters — there wasn’t a single cliché in the bunch. That’s because the writing was great, and the young, previously undiscovered actors were up to the challenge. So we have no doubt that the likes of Spencer Grammer, Scott Michael Foster, and Dilshad Vadsaria will be on our TV screens for years to come. Clark Duke already rocked in Hot Tub Time Machine (yeah, we saw it; deal with it) and Kick Ass. And our collective EW office crush, Amber Stevens, already landed a role in Fox’s drama pilot, Weekends at Bellevue. We’ll raise a red cup to long and happy careers for the whole cast.

2. Its new take on college life. There’s an odd lack of shows about this age group, especially given that things are so interesting at that time in life. There’s sex, there’s drama, there’s drinking, there’s comedy. Nothing’s too serious yet, but everything feels super-dramatic. You can still act a little like a kid, but you’re trying desperately to grow up and make all the right decisions. Greek got all that, capturing the angst of Felicity and the free-spirited fun of ’80s college movies like The Sure Thing. As Cappie said (during that whole Gamma Psi accidental fire drama): “I know it may seem like the biggest deal in the world right now, but it was an accident. And some day it will just be a really good story.” College, in one pithy quote.

3. The pop-culture references. They were hard to keep track of, there were so many (one of our faves: the ZBZ patterning of their cover-up of the Gamma Psi fire after Criminal Minds and Scrubs plots). Just a few one-liners to remember … Cappie: “Happy Spring Break Evan Pompeo… of Grey’s Anatomy fame.” Casey: “Yesterday, Ash wanted to know why I have this smile, and I couldn’t think of an excuse, so I told her I was thinking about the rise and fall of Mischa Barton.”

4. The sensitive, nuanced, not-too-much-and-not-too-little portrayal of gay relationships. We love you, Calvin.

5. The mutual and public love affair between Greek and EW. See: EW’s multi-episode guest-cameo arc as Engineering Weekly. See also: Our extensive and drooly blogging on Greek. We’ll miss you, Greek! And we like to think you’ll miss us, too.

Classes are back in session for the fun-loving kids of Greek, the college dramedy that began Season 4 last week with Casey (Spencer Grammer) starting the next stage of her life: law school. So expect less partying, more studying? Not according to Grammer!

TV Guide Magazine: Casey Cartwright: First-year law student. Are viewers in for some Legally Blonde-like moments?
Grammer: I think it’s completely inspired by that. [Laughs] You always root for Casey and it’s fun when she gets to succeed, especially when it’s with something completely ridiculous.

TV Guide Magazine: Will Casey ever succeed in making things work with on-again, off-again boyfriend Cappie?
Grammer: [Sighs] It’s much like it has been — up and down. But this season, Casey is more focused on figuring out who she wants to be and whether Cappie will fit into that. That’s her situation.

V Guide Magazine: And Casey is becoming a ZBZ housemother, so I guess that means she’ll still be active in Greek life?
Grammer: She wants to maintain her status and feel powerful, and she feels most comfortable at the ZBZ house, but since she’s not the Queen Bee any more, it’s frustrating for her.

TV Guide Magazine: Will Casey ever find time to unwind?
Grammer: There are a couple of big parties. There’s a luge at one of them that I slide down, so that’s kind of fun.

TV Guide Magazine: What else have you been up to?
Grammer: I needed some time to myself, so I enrolled in school.

TV Guide Magazine: Life imitating art?
Grammer: I didn’t have many classes left when I got Greek. I didn’t know we’d be a success! But I knew I’d go back and finish. I set goals and I stick to them.

Spencer Grammer slips into a Manhattan cafe, looking very much like the New Yorker she is.

“I’m wearing my New York uniform,” she says, “two black shirts, a black sweater and jeggings. Oh, and purple socks.”

As Casey on ABC Family’s Greek, Grammer is more fashion-oriented than she is on her own.

“They are just clothes at the end of the day,” Grammer says. “It’s not rocket science. They keep us warm. If you wear things that are really expensive, it may not be who you are.”

She attends some red carpet events with her dad, Kelsey, and she enjoys wearing a dress, but she raves when talking about her recent acquisition of a military backpack that she intends to take on her travels.

As Casey, however, she was more sorority sister, demure.

“I used to wear florally things or sweater sets,” she says.

“I wanted to age her up a bit more,” Grammer says of Casey’s evolving look. “Not any more empire-waisted cap-sleeved dresses. I am not that fussy. If you put it in the room, I will put it on.”

Now Casey is in law school and has changed her look.

“She has an every girl look, but every girl turning into a woman going into the first serious moment careerwise,” says costumer designer Carole Beadle.

“Now she has more sleek things,” Grammer says.

Beadle shops for Casey at H&M, Zara, Barneys, Urban Outfitters, Opening Ceremony and J. Crew.

Beadle also shops for Casey at Club Monaco and Banana Republic. Casey wears Theory suits and J Brand jeans. Her tops are from Helmut Lang and Marc Jacobs.

“She wears a lot of cardigans because Grammer likes sleeves,” Beadle says. “And she also wears lot of scarves. They just added that softness to her.”

Her shoes are from Dolce Vita, Jeffrey Campbell, Miu Miu and Nine West.

Though many college students live in jeans and sweatshirts, Beadle says Casey looks like a graduate student “with a bit of money. It’s not a major stretch, not like a Beverly Hills student. I definitely didn’t go that way. She could buy her stuff at Century 21 and on sale at Barneys. I just tried to bring some of the rest of America into it and I tried hard to not make it look West Coast.”

Casey “dresses for herself and not specifically to pick up a guy,” Beadle says. “But of course, with the attention to still looking – not dowdy at all – a little bit of cool, a little bit of academic, she dresses for herself and her vision for herself as a lawyer and starting to think ahead more.”

On her favorite scene of Greek ever she said, “Hands down that pool table scene from the pilot that we did.” You know what? That WAS a great scene. I might have to go rewatch some season 1 of Greek…just to get my fix until new episodes air!

With “Greek’s” fourth season coming up this summer — no premiere date has been announced as yet — series lead Spencer Grammer will once again be seen convincingly portraying a sorority girl. Oddly enough, it’s a role the actress says she would never have fit into, had she pledged in real life.

“I have some friends who were involved in sororities, but I never did any of it myself,” notes Grammer, who attended Marymount Manhattan College. “I think fraternities and sororities are great for people. I’ve just never been one to do stuff like that.

“I didn’t hang out with the cheerleaders in high school. I was always in theater or art classes. If there had been a sorority that read books and had discussions about it, I would have joined that,” she says with a laugh.

“I love reading existentialism and listening to jazz. I’m just weird. When I turned 25, all I started to do is listen to NPR and ‘This American Life’ on Saturdays. I’m like, ‘What happened to me?’”

At least Grammer gets to act young at heart on set. “I love playing Casey because it’s so different from me, as far as the way I talk and the way that I express myself. I’m like happy and bubbly, but not as much as she is. It’s fun to get to go be somebody else for six months a year.”

Series creator Sean Smith has indicated that the 10-episode Season 4 will be “Greek’s” finale, and he wants the show to finish strong.
